Police and Thieves began as a two hour radio show for aging punks that aired on WUSC-FM Columbia, a college station owned by the University of South Carolina. Radio is amazing. As much of a pain in the ass as it was to pull together a two hour show every week, I still loved it, and like many college radio alumni, those years will always be a part of who I am.
I grew up with parents who worked in broadcast for many years, and many of the major life changes that I experienced were the result of the consolidation and conglomeration of media outlets in the 1990′s. Major moves, layoffs, and quality of life were dependent on what was happening in the industry. A few years later, the time spent as a staff member at a non-commercial radio station with the reach and impact of WUSC-FM completed the picture of what was happening with radio. During my time at the University of South Carolina and WUSC-FM Columbia (alumni status included, I volunteered in some form or fashion for about 7 years), I began to believe more and more in the value of independent radio as an educational and entertainment medium.
Upon relocating further up the east coast, to a city that has no indie radio of note, I decided to parlay the Police and Thieves blog into a resource center for the independent stations that are still hanging in there throughout the United States. As the numbers dwindle, and as internet broadcasting regulations continue to change, I hope that the non-commercial and independent radio community will stay connected and keep doing what they do best– broadcasting the best content possible.
